There was another prison suicide yesterday. This one was a friend of mine. I din’t know why he did it. He didn't seem depressed. He wasn’t on prescription meds. Everyone here has secrets. We try to look strong and confident on the yard but go to bed each night with our demons.
He was found hanging from the neck. He used a beed sheet pulled through the air vent in the ceiling. He was left hanging half the day until the investigation permitted he be cut down.
The use of the bed sheet to hang one’s self in prison is so cliche. I must wonder why the prison still has air vents in the ceiling with holes large enough to thread anything through. Is the cost of securing or replacing the vents too much or just not worth saving the lives.
It wasn't on the local news. It wasn't in the newspaper obituaries. Just gone. Nobody ever kicks up a conversation about how to stop suicides in prison. Its not important.
Do you believe in the death penalty? I think it would be interesting to hear what your perspective on it is because you come in contact people who have committed one crime or multiple ones and whether it is an affective way of punishment. Do you think it is better to keep someone locked up, death, or even on in some occasions people don't serve full jail time for doing horrible crimes? Do you think most of the people in prison will just keep going back to what they were doing before because it is all they know. Is the death penalty an easy way out or do you believe it is inhumane? I would love to hear an honest answer for both the pros and cons from your perspective and not just a yes or no, but some thought into why you are for or against. Just curious.
